Necrosis: Introduction ULNDHjL

The year is 2004. Somewhere in Maine.

We thought modern medicine and disease prevention strategies had all but removed the chance of an epidemic affecting the populace. However, this wasn't so much a disease as it was a horrifying, worldwide phenomenon; something that irreparably altered our natural cycle of life and death. In defiance of all laws of science, the deceased simply began returning to life. Mere husks of whoever they may have once been, these shambling corpses immediately began to prey on the warm flesh of the living. The people they killed, got up and killed some more. Healthy individuals that suffered bites or fluidic contact from these 'zombies' were doomed to die and rise themselves; it was like the undead carried with them a lethal venom in their blood and saliva. Though being bitten was a common way to die, it didn't matter how your doom came about... if you died with an intact brain, you got back up.

The first week was marked by widespread panic. Many people died in the initial chaos, not just at the hands of the undead. But it didn't matter, the thousands that died in car accidents, riots, and at the hands of their paranoid neighbors, they only added to the growing hordes. The initial government response was hasty and confused, as the authorities were slow to grasp the concept of the undead. Local police and National Guard units were overrun quickly.

It's now been over a month since 'The Turn' first happened. Rotting bodies choke the gutters, looters are getting increasingly violent, and the government has been slowly falling apart. Martial law has been declared, and although military jets and helicopters are commonly seen in the distant skies, zombies still control the streets of most towns and nearly every city-. The emergency services, such as police, fire, and ambulance units are still active to a minimal degree, though only in conjunction with the army. The radio often jabbers about high-profile military operations elsewhere in the country, where the army continues to fight a losing war against the tide of undead from the urban centers. The radio also frequently mentions various rescue stations and supposed 'safe zones', though all of them are far out of your reach.
